Babies Care

What Parents Need to Observe when changing nappy

There are a number of things, which parents need to observe when changing nappy. For instance, they need to ensure that they get every item, which is required in the process. A clean nappy, a baby washcloth, nappy cream, plastic bag and clean clothes for changing the baby are required. The surface to change the nappy should also be prepared for example, by using changing pads or a towel.

Before and after changing nappy, the parents should ensure that they wash their hands. This helps in washing away any germs, which may be transferred to the baby. The parent should also ensure that they do not leave the baby alone on the bed or changing surface in order to avoid falling. This substantiates the reason why the parent should source for all the items required for changing the nappy before beginning the process.

When cleaning the nappy area for example, the genital parts, the parent should clean from the front to the back. A dampened washcloth should be used. The nappy cream should be applied on the nappy area to prevent nappy rashes. Moreover, when changing nappy, the nappy adhesive strips should be unfastened and folded on to themselves for the case of nappy removal so that they do not stick on the baby. When the parent has put the clean nappy under the baby, the adhesive strips should be fastened (not tightly) from the back to the front.

It’s a Dirty Job But Someone’s Gotta Do It: The Nappy Change!

It’s a task that many new parents dread: the nappy change. Sure it’s dirty and yes, it can be smelly, but, at the end of the day, someone has to change the nappy. You’re baby, after all, can’t change it on his or her own. There’s no sense having a row over who’s going to be the one to do it. Jump in and get it done!

Who

Anyone can change a nappy. Nappy changing isn’t mummy’s job and it isn’t daddy’s job. Nappy changing is the job of each parent in the house. You don’t have to have been born a certain sex to be able to change a nappy.

What

To change a nappy you’ll need nappies (obviously); either cloth or disposable. Baby wipes, zinc oxide, powder and a changing pad or blanket.

Where

Nappies can be changed just about anywhere. The safest place to change your baby’s nappy is on a blanket on the floor. This will prevent any chance of you turning your back and your infant rolling off of a high surface. You can also change your baby’s nappy whilst your babe is lying in the crib.

When

An infant’s nappy should be changed about every two hours. More often if the nappy is soiled frequently. As the child ages, the nappy will need to be changed less frequently. Nappies should also be changed first thing in the morning, whether soiled or not. This will allow your baby’s bum to air out a bit.

How

Changing nappies is a fairly simple procedure. Remove the old nappy, clean your baby’s bum and genital region, sprinkle a bit of powder on your baby’s thighs and spread some zinc oxide cream on your baby’s bum. Put a new nappy on the baby and you’re done!

Nappy changing is dirty; anyone will agree. Happily, nappy changing will only last for a few years and is just one aspect of raising a happy baby. Remember: you’ll spend less time actually changing the nappy than you will arguing over who’s going to do it!
