Onion: A Natural Diuretic

We mentioned the other day the importance of the onion as a natural diuretic, through their actions that allow the body to remove retained fluid and activate the functions of the kidneys. This time, the scientific backing gives a boost to the implementation of the onion.

A study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food made with rats, showed that the onion acts as a natural diuretic, to fight allergic reactions involving the development of edema, caused by the excessive amount of fluid trapped in the tissues of the body.

In tests on rats, researchers found that a natural extract of onion rodents were allowed to remove retained fluid greatly, especially when they were produced by allergic reactions. The research, conducted on rats but also has application to humans, thus allowing to use the onion to take their diuretic action.

In ayurveda, the traditional Hindu system of medicine, onions have always been used to combat conditions such as fever or bronchitis, and even to treat edema. Furthermore, in traditional Chinese medicine is applied to treat bronchial problems and colds.
